sensory and outdoor learning space

co12

The project brief for this Essex Primary School required the transformation of a disused section of the playing field into a social space with sensory areas, play areas and a growing area. My design featured a central outdoor learning classroom with radiating raised beds, edged with compost bins and storage. There was a wildflower area, native hedges, play kitchen, sensory pathway, school community board, among many other features.

The garden was built by a wonderful volunteer group of staff, pupils and parents of the school, with materials generously donated by local businesses. It has been a huge success.

The Headteacher, Mrs Patrick said “Sarah really understood the essence of Spring Meadow. Through her design she captured the need for a nature-based learning area where the kids can really get involved with outdoor activities such as the seed to plate process and the importance of biodiversity. Her research and understanding of the needs of children cleverly culminated in an immersive sensory experience for all”
